Werner X. Uehlinger began the HatHut label in 1975 to launch recordings by Joe McPhee and shortly adopted them with albums by rising avant-garde jazz musicians together with Steve Lacy, David Murray, David S. Ware, and Jimmy Lyons. The label’s first releases have been by Joe McPhee. From 1980 to 1981, following the closing alphabetic catalog number, hath releases had a written numeric catalog wide variety observed through a bracketed RO code where the first digit of the code indicated a single 1RO, double 2RO, or triple 3RO LP.
