Today we announce two great additions to our Catalyst 9000 family. The Catalyst 9200 switch and therefore the Catalyst 9800 wireless LAN controller. If you are in the networking space, you will find a lot to like about these products. Several interconnected teams at Cisco worked for several years to bring them to you, and I’m proud of all of them.

But there are a few key reasons why I love these products, which I want to share.

1. One operating system for everything

From the ultra-high capacity Catalyst 9500 Core switch that anchors the Catalyst 9000 line to the new Cisco Switch Catalyst 9200 branch office and mid-market access switch to the all-new Catalyst 9800 wireless LAN controller, we have one operating system that drives them all.

IOS XE, which we first implemented in 2017 on the Catalyst 9000, is the latest update to Cisco’s core operating system. It’s modular, programmable, and supports all the capabilities of our new intent-based network controller, DNA Center. That means with a simple user interface, you can automate, set policies, provide security, and gain security across the entire fabric of your wired and wireless network, from the most remote branch or campus to your most central system.

Every Catalyst 9000 appliance is built from the ground up for intent-based networking. Our Catalyst 9200 switch is affordable for new installations but takes advantage of the world-class switching capacity (and ASIC architecture) of the rest of the Catalyst 9000 family.

The Catalyst 9800 takes everything we know about wireless networking, based on more than 15 years of refinement from WLCs and access points the world trusts and combines it with the most secure, scalable, and resilient network device operating system. of the world.

5 things to know about the Catalyst 9000 or 9200 expansion

2. Passion for user experience

From purchase to installation to administration, we’ve refined every part of the Catalyst 9000 owner experience.

Our new subscription-based model aligns our success with that of our clients. Our teams are passionate about providing constant improvement capabilities to keep up with the changing demands of the business. We want to do more than sell you a box. Our new Catalyst 9000 products are designed to continually deliver new innovations through software. Since shipping the first Catalyst 9000, we have added substantial new capabilities to it, such as IoT integration and an integrated wireless controller.

We are also making it easier to use advanced networking capabilities than in the past. All Catalyst 9000 products, from the new Catalyst 9200 branch switch to the Catalyst 9800 cloud-based wireless controller, can be managed through the DNA Center console.

Networking is complex enough on its own. We are serious about simplifying your advanced product experience so you can focus on your overall network, not individual infrastructure devices.

3. Ready for the future of software

Today, networking innovation keeps pace with software. Also our new devices. For example, network macro and micro-segmentation, a key tool for keeping networks and users safe from bad actors and stopping the proliferation of threats, meet all products on a Catalyst 9000-based fabric, directly controlled from a Cisco DNA Center. controller. We also support Assurance, a software capability that can provide visibility into your network so you can make sure you’re doing what you want it to do. And we use advanced analytics to provide you with a warning to network threats as they arise, albeit they’re in encrypted traffic, thanks partially to our integration with Cisco TALOS threat intelligence.

DNA Center supports an expanding library of APIs, so our partners and customers can build even more applications and use cases on top of their automated networks. We are creating content and tools to help network operators work with these programmable features.

And for the first time, we also released a software version of one of our key Catalyst 9000 capabilities. The Catalyst 9800 Wireless Controller is available not only in a new high-performance chassis that you can run on-premises, but also as additional software that can run on select Catalyst 9000 switches, or even a private or public cloud.

4. Always on

Networking is not just a business function. As with electrical power, people depend on connections to live. Our products are based on providing a continuous, consistent, and secure network to all users.

Almost all Catalyst 9000 series products support hot patching, so you’ll install critical updates without affecting user access; The Catalyst 9800 Wireless Controller will even manage continuous updates to WiFi access points, so no part of an installation is without a useful wireless signal.

Our Catalyst 9200, 9300, and 9400 switches also support Perpetual Power over Ethernet, ensuring that even if a switch is rebooted, all devices that depend on it for power will remain active. The switches themselves also support highly reliable features such as redundant fans and power supplies across the portfolio.

We will bring more enterprise-grade high availability features to our Catalyst 9000 line with future updates.

5. It’s our life’s work

This is what I really want people to know: these Catalyst 9000 products are new, but they are not. They are based on more than 30 years of experience in networking. Our engineering teams are made up of people who literally designed basic network protocols that are used around the world. We keep these people busy and challenged, which is why Cisco engineers tend to stay with Cisco longer than employees at any other technology company.

We keep them fresh by making their work challenging, like asking them to reinvent networks. We are constantly looking for new talent and startups that tackle technology problems in new ways. That’s why we’ve acquired world-class companies in the wireless, SD-WAN, security, and application-level networking tools, to name a few.

We stay close to our customers across all industries, such as retail, healthcare, education, high-tech, government, manufacturing, and service provider, to ensure that we learn the challenges each industry faces and to make sure we can innovate to help you meet your business goals.

The result? About half of the world’s network access ports connect to a Catalyst product. I cannot begin to express how seriously we take the responsibility of keeping these networks up and running and keeping the companies that run them up-to-date, competitive, and efficient.
